For some, it’s the enticing idea of travelling and working alongside other digital nomads all over the world. While that prospect does excite me and will certainly be a part of my future in the long term, it doesn’t fall into my immediate reasons why I wanted to become a virtual assistant.
I am a single mum that has a very busy and active homeschooled son. We are literally busy every day. There was once a time when he was in school and we lived this repetitive life of the work/school cycle which is so familiar to most people. I just found there was little to no time to really do things we enjoyed, whether that be activities we did together or our own separate social lives. We were bound by these working/school hours which I felt were extraordinarily suffocating.
I spent some time and money learning how to get clients and understanding what I could and couldn’t do, then I brought my work in property management down to a part time arrangement and started to freelance as a virtual assistant. I am so glad I took the risk because now I feel like I am living the life I have always dreamt of.
Taking the leap from employee to freelancer was one of the scariest things I have ever done. Constant thoughts of doubt like ‘What if it doesn’t work’, ‘What if I can’t pay my bills’ were often at the forefront of my mind. I created a short list if of my ‘Why’s’ and kept the list close to me at all times. Having this list helped me on my mission to keep pursuing this new life I had envisioned for myself.
Here Are My Top 8 reasons why I became a Freelancer So I Can Work When And Where I Want.
- Be available for my son and family commitments
- Set my own hours and not be bound by 9 to 5
- Work to my own priority schedule
- Can create variety in my life rather than the same day in and day out
- Can work from home or a café or anywhere I want
- A busy office distracts, I am way more productive on my own
- I can throw a load of washing on while I answer calls
- I can accomplish a lot before 9am and go out for that extended breakfast or beach walk
After the last 5 years of working for several clients at the same time, I am very fortunate now to have just the one client with a few projects on the go to keep me very busy and enables me to do what I love and live everyday according to my highest priorities. I am very grateful to be able to offer them a service that allows me to live and work the way I want to.
